In this ongoing project I am responding to the energy, rhythm and movement of the ocean. A powerful metaphor for life and death, redemption and renewal, it is the temporality and physical pull of the tides that are my subject, and I try to capture these through drawings that record the movement of the water. These paintings begin from drawings and a gesture made onto the canvas using ink, I then perform a physical process of washing the surface of barely primed canvas with thinned oil paint and medium, scrubbing and staining the canvas to build optical layers of colour. I see these paintings as a static embodiment of sensation, energy and movement.
