Unmastered paintings 2025

Images torn from ‘The Masters’  (Knowledge Publications) are my reference materials, collaged beyond recognition but still holding remnants of painterly language.  Moving onto wooden panels, oil paint is as much removed as it is applied to the painting’s surface, thin layers of glaze wash over and merge with the not-yet-dry layer beneath and marks are still visible where paint has dried and clung to the surface to offer both a fresh luminous quality with that of age and grime.  My intention with this series of paintings is to question established narratives that are commonly held in the collective conscious about painting – what was it for and why?
