With these paintings I have played fast and loose with chance. Working small I find is an intense test; to create sensation, tension, and familiarity within a confined space; to dig away until a chance encounter or motif emerges that I can relate to.
I work from drawings of places that are like compositional maps, or from collages, to open the painting, the outlines of which may then be discarded as the surface builds.
To break a painting is to take a risk and drop myself into unknown territory, where I must get myself out of trouble and, in doing so, build something mysterious and unfamiliar that I can respond to.
My aim is to let the paintings remain playful and light, inviting the viewer to feel the uncertainty and sensation of the process.
